Welcome to my tour page
Where am I going in 2022?
A (13 night) unsupported camping tour from Bremen (Germany) to Copenhagen (Denmark), returning via Trelleborg (Sweden) and finishing in Osnabrück (Germany). This tour has been created as a continuation of the CTC Cycling Holidays Netherlands & Germany - Amsterdam to Bremen tour that I ran in 2019.
Starting from where the 2019 tour left off in Bremen, we ride through the German states of Nieder Sachsen and Schleswig-Holstein, visiting the Hanseatic League city of Lübeck (a World Heritage Site) on the way. From Puttgarden (Germany), we take the ferry over the Fehmarn Belt to Rødby on the island of Lolland (Denmark). We pass over the island of Falster onto the island of Sjælland (Zeeland) and onwards towards Copenhagen. We have two night stops in Lübeck and Copenhagen (to soak up the legendary cycling culture).
We will return to Osnabrück using a combination of trains and overnight ferry. Train travel from Amsterdam to Bremen and from Osnabrück back to Amsterdam is included, as is the overnight ferry from Trelleborg to Rostock, and train travel from Rostock to Osnabrück.
The tour is also available without Amsterdam-Bremen and Osnabrück-Amsterdam train travel for those who wish to make their own way.
My experience and style
What to expect
Who am I?
I have been cycle touring for about 20 years. Since 2007 I have assisted on a number of CTC Cycle Holidays before moving up to the Deputy role and finally to Tour Leader. My day job is working for an IT services company, though my early career was as a Land Surveyor working in Africa and the Middle East.
My tour leading style
My approach is to learn as much as possible about the area we are travelling through, so that I can relax and enjoy the tour as much as everyone else. I am usually to be found at the front of the group where I can ensure that the pace isn't too high, though I am perfectly happy for a faster group to be formed.
The roads I take
I prefer to follow off-road long distance cycle routes wherever possible, though I am not averse to taking shortcuts when routes meander unnecessarily, or are a bit repetitive. I like to find the most scenic or interesting routes and spend a great deal of time looking at alternative routes to find the best route possible.
The places we stay
I am mainly interested in organising moving on camping tours. The choice of campsites is usually dictated by what is available in the area, though I do look to avoid large holiday park type sites as I find that most tour participants prefer to stay at smaller family run campsites.
Where do I go?
My main interest is touring in northern Europe. I look to include reserved train travel for the group wherever possible, which does limit to some degree where we can go. I find Germany to be a good place to tour due to the combination of good bicycle provision on trains, a large number of long-distance cycle routes, and varied scenery.
Where have I been?
I have toured in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany solo, with friends, and with organised group tours. I have acted as the Deputy Tour Leader on a number of European tours and organised and ran the 2019 camping tour from Amsterdam to Bremen.
